Good Evening Padres,

If your family is anything like mine, a three day weekend is a welcome sight on the calendar. While we all may look forward to the additional time off, I think it is also essential we all remember the man for whom we celebrate and the impact Dr. King’s words still have on us today. King famously wrote, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” I am honored to work at an institution that requires students to engage in community service as a core value of the educational plan. While this weekend may not be the time in your household, I do challenge each of you (myself included) to dedicate time and resources to engaging with the larger community and reach out to others in a method you feel is most appropriate. Each day I am amazed at the levels of compassion our students show for each other and I know that is due in large part to you as parents. I will continue to set  our students on a call to action to embody Dr King’s words and seek out ways to do good for others.

The Week Behind

This week was very much the calm before the scheduling storm. The counseling team and I have been hard at work updating the course catalog and preparing for class registration for the 2020-2021 school year. We will begin by meeting with the incoming 9th grade students in the upcoming weeks, followed by the current 9th-11th students. A separate email outlining the entire process is forthcoming so keep an eye on your inboxes.

The Week(s) Ahead

Next week is a busy week on campus highlighted by our Visual and Performing Arts Show on Wednesday February 22nd at 7pm. This is a great opportunity to see all the hard work students in these programs are doing. The show will also be previewed for 8th grade students from CMS on Wednesday Morning and the CHS student body will get the chance to see it on Thursday during the morning at special assemblies.  We will also be having our Elective Fair on Friday January 24th. The Elective fair is a chance for students to see what programs are out there to sign up for next year. Often our electives are the outlets for students to showcase their passions and develop new talents through these innovative classes.

Do your kids have more art supplies than you have space for? Consider donating them to the art supply drive! the CHS Interact Club is holding a drive for new and gently used art supplies to benefit Syrian refugee children. The drive goes through Friday, January 24, and donation boxes are located in the library, Mrs. Govan's room, and Mr. Buran's room.

Just a friendly reminder if you plan to visit our campus. As part of our larger district-wide focus on safety, CUSD is implementing the Raptor Visitor Management system at all of our school campuses. This system instantly screens all visitors, volunteers, and contractors against the sex offender registries in all 50 states. Starting January 6, 2020 all visitors to our schools will be required to check in at the front office with a picture ID. Please remember to bring your picture ID to your child's school each time you visit.

Please join Carmel High School Athletic Boosters at this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am as we once again provide the volunteers for the concession at Monterey Peninsula Country Club Ocean Road concession. This is a great opportunity to support CHS Athletic Boosters and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am as we raise monies to support our student athletes, sports medicine program and coaches. Last year we earned close to $7000 thanks to our awesome volunteers who donated their time! We were praised by all for our volunteers enthusiasm, exceptional customer service, speed and professionalism as they whipped up all of those beverages!

All monies earned by CHS Athletic Boosters volunteer efforts go directly to our student athletes by way of a per athlete donation for all sports programs at Carmel High School. These monies are also used for grants  and contribute to the Boosters scholarship program. Please consider volunteering your time and help us with this great opportunity.

Friday, February 8th will be the BIG DAY at MPCC and would greatly appreciate as many volunteers as possible on this day. For every 4.5 hour volunteer shift on any day you will be provided a lunch & pass to watch and enjoy the tournament!
