Principal's Friday Email

Good Afternoon Bobcat Families,
I hope this last week went well and that everyone is excited for the last seven weeks of school when we return from spring break. That time is going to fly by as it always does. We will need to make sure to make the most of it.
As society has started to open back up I have been thinking a lot about our outlook on the year, “What if?” I have been wondering, “what if we actually take the time to remember the good things that we hopefully learned from this pandemic and make them a part of our new normal rather than just trying to return to our old lives?” I recently read an article, Dear Normal: Were you really that great in the first place?, which ended with:
“When life changed, there was a period of adjustment. It took a while to get used to it. Then we did. That’s happening again right now in the United States as more people are vaccinated and infection rates decrease. Already, the pulls of Normal are tugging.
For all the growth and change and adaptation that has happened in the past year, it is hard to even define what a post-pandemic normalcy might mean. The dictionary defines it simply as conforming to a standard — usual, typical, or expected. Is that really what we want? “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be,” Maya Angelou once said.
Without Normal, the path forward is more open, the opportunities perhaps broader. What if there’s a whole lot of amazing that stands to be lost if Normal returns? What if, instead of banking on normalcy, we focused on that one-of-a-kind ability to adapt and evolve? Maybe that’s the way forward, instead of simply reconciling with what was and trying to recreate something that’s already had its day.
It’s too late, anyway. Remember, Normal: You and me, we already broke up.”
As we head into spring break and the end of the school year, I hope that everyone will take time as a family to remember and reflect on this past year and somehow document all of the good things this time brought with it as well as the lessons learned and set goals for what you want your new normal life to look like. As a pastor I heard one time say, “mental ink fades fast.” So whether it is a photo book, a personal or family journal, a collage, or something more creative, I hope you take the time to create something as a family you can look back on later to remember. Because if we are not intentional about how we live our lives, society and all of its consumerism will dictate it for us.

For Everyone Returning In-Person
For those of you returning to campus after break, it is important that you review our “Returning to School Packet” that was emailed out last Friday and can be found on our “In-School Learning Information” link on our website.
Please make sure to read through the “Drop-off and Pick-Up” information in the “Returning to School Packet” and look at the attached map so you know how you need to drive to campus so we do not back up cars and create a very unsafe situation on Carmel Valley Rd.
To better assist the drop-off and wellness checks to go well, please make sure to:
- Visit Tularcitos over break and find out where your child’s classroom is located so they know where to go when they get out of the car on April 19th.
- Install and use the Parent Square App to complete your wellness check questions at home before driving to school. Here are the direction for using the app.
- Download the app for your phone from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
- On a computer, just go to parentsquare.com/signin to set up your account
- For detailed instructions, check out this link to a quick step-by-step installation guide, which includes a video.
- For help with the ParentSquare app, you can submit a help request at
- https://carmelunified.
incidentiq.com/guest/NVJFER9S/ parent-ticket
- Leave the app up on your phone or take a screen shot of the “passed check” screen showing the green boxes for each child. If you are dropping off children from another family, have that family’s parents text you a screen shot photo of their child’s passed health screening.
- Drive the correct way around campus (see the drop-off procedure mentioned above)
- When you get in line at the wellness check immediately,
- roll the windows of your car down
- make sure everyone has their masks on
- bring up the ParentSquare app on your phone, (or a screen shot of the “passed” screen when you completed it at home before you got in the car
- Have your child’s backpacks next to them in the car as they will not be able to get out of the car and get backpacks out of the trunk/back of the car.
To better make the pick-up times go well:
- Make sure to drive the correct way around campus
- Make sure to fill out and hang the signs we are handing out to students on Monday from your rear-view mirror when you get to school (we realize you will not have them Monday, the 19th). That way we can quickly call for your student.
Message about Music Bags
Mrs. Kremer would like to remind all students who are returning to campus after break that they will need to bring their red music bags to school for continued use in class. Families should be sure to write the students' name in permanent marker on each bag and bring all of the original items that were inside. While Mrs. Kremer is excited to be able to have in-person music classes conducted safely outside, we will not be able to share materials. Students will need their own individual items for their music lessons for the rest of the year. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Kremer.
Message to Those Staying in Distance
Please make sure that your child has accepted the invitation to the new google classroom prior to April 19. We want to make sure they can get into their new class that day. Please also know that the fastest way to get tech assistance that Monday is through our “Tech Support Request” on our online Distance Learning Portal. If you run into trouble on April 19, please use that support request rather than calling our front office. You will get faster and better support that way.
Information for Everyone
You can Still get a Yearbook
There is still time to order the yearbook for this crazy COVID year. You will definitely want it as a memory. From now until May 14th, yearbooks are $25 and are available for purchase online. Please go to www.jostens.com.
For 5th grade parents only:
It would be great if each 5th grader was represented in the memory pages of the yearbook. Treat your child to lasting memories in the yearbook with Memory Pages (a.k.a Yearbook Recognition Ads). Although the deadline
State Testing
It turns out that our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are going to need to do state testing this year. Thankfully, the test is being condensed so that it is not as long as normal. While it is unfortunate that we will have to give up about six hours to do this, the results will help us in finding out how this year impacted our students’ learning. We will be taking time over the weeks of May 10 and 17 for our students to do this and spreading out the testing so it least impacts the school day. While we will be doing what we can to make sure our students know what to expect when they take this test, we will not be doing as much practice as a normal year because we do not want to spend any more time on the state tests than we have to during the precious time we have left. We want to make sure we are spending our time on learning, building relationships, and enjoying being back at school.
Message from our PTO
Thank you to everyone who came to our PTO meeting on Wed. For next year we are looking for a new President and Vice President. If you are interested, please contact Mr. Peterson or current PTO President, Gina Nucci at gina.nucci@gmail.com.
