Volunteer Appreciation

Thank you, again, so much to all of you who volunteer at Tularcitos.  For those of you who were able to make it to the appreciation assembly and brunch today, we hope you enjoyed it.  For those of you who could not make it, please know we tremendously value the time and love you put into the students and staff at Tular.

Art Show Volunteers Needed

We are in need of help getting our students’ art ready for the art show at our open house.  We need a number of volunteers before, during, and after to put their work on display.  Please sign up in the link below.

Bobcat Beach Cleanup

Bobcat families will be partnering with the Surfrider Foundation to help clean up Del Monte Beach on Sunday, April 28, from 10:00-12:00.  We’ll meet at Monterey Municipal Wharf 2.  Bags and gloves will be provided by the Surfrider Foundation, but we would recommend bringing your own gloves.  All students must be accompanied by their parents/guardians.  Let’s show that Bobcat and Ocean Guardian Spirit and help keep our environment clean

Tular Family Campout

There was some confusion about the camp-out.  This is for the whole family (moms, dads, and kids, or whoever can make it).  It will be the night of Friday, May 17.  We only have a certain number of spaces available on our lower field, and still have a few more available.  Spaces will be given at a first-come-first-served basis.  Please turn your registration (found on the flier) into the office ASAP to reserve your spot.  We are asking a $25 donation for a camping spot, but if that is too much, feel free to give what you can.  It will be a fun night with the CV Pool being open for swimming as well as dinner (there is a separate charge to swim and for dinner), s’mores, and outdoor movie, and pancake breakfast Saturday morning.  Families will be able to start setting up their camping spot (more information coming on how this will work) any time after 3:30 that Friday and will need to be packed up and off campus by 11:00 Saturday.

Message from our PTO

Our next meeting will be Wed, May 1 at 8:45 in Bobcat Hall.  Nominations for 2019/20 Board Members went out last week.  Please return any ASAP to Lauren Robertson.  At the May meeting we will be voting in next year’s board.  Lauren Robertson (PTO Vice-President) can be reached at mom2lizardboy@gmail.com

Next week as the finale of Teacher appreciation Week, the parents of Tularcitos will be hosting the annual staff appreciation banquet. The PTO is  supplying the main course which will be salmon and chicken but we will need appetizers / side dishes and desserts. We also need people to volunteer for yard duty so that all of the staff can actually sit down together and enjoy a meal. Please sign up below!

Puberty Ed

We presented a puberty education video to our 4th grade girls and our 5th grade boys last week.  We have found in the past that those times are the most appropriate for the given ages and genders. The video we use is extremely informative, well done, and relatable to the students.  We hope that parents will take the time to follow up with their child about what they learned.  We also hope that parents will continue to have ongoing conversations with their children as the children’s bodies continue to change in the future.

Sex Ed

At school we only do puberty education.  We do not do sex education.  Sex is something parents need to educate their children about, and ideally before children start talking about it with their friends.  Sex is something our children are exposed to earlier and earlier these days.  Given that the average age a student is exposed to pornography these days is about 11 (unfortunately, you read that right), when your child is in 4th or 5th grade is the time to start thinking about, planning, and having your discussions with your child.  With the internet, if a child is curious about something, an answer (whether it is the one you want them to have or not) is a click away.  Sex is too important to let the internet do the educating (unless it is helping you with talking to your child about it).   This is not a onetime conversation with your child.  It is an ongoing conversation that starts young and continues throughout the teen years, making sure to discuss topics that are age appropriate.  Remember that children learn best through dialog, so talk with, not at, your child.  Sex education is not just about sex.  It is about having a positive self-image, how to have healthy relationships, how to treat the opposite sex with dignity and respect, having a healthy view of physical intimacy in your relationship (all the way from holding hands to sex), and communicating your convictions.  As parents, if we fail to educate our students the media, the internet, or their friends will do the educating.  Sex is way too important of a topic to let others take the role of educating our children.  If you are a parent of a 4th or 5th grader and haven’t begun discussing sex with your child, please begin planning and having that conversation so your children can enjoy healthy relationships and experience intimacy at appropriate times as they grow up.

Kindergarten and TK Registration Packets for Next Year are Available

If you have a child that will be attending TK or Kindergarten next year please come to the school office and pick up a registration packet ASAP.  If you have any friends or neighbours with children that will be attending next year please spread the word.  On-line registration for returning students will be sent out via email in May. If you have any questions please call the school office.
