Carmel Child Development Center was established in 1987 in response to the community’s growing preschool and child-care needs.  The Child Development Center is licensed to serve children from 6 weeks to 6 years old.

Carmelo is located 4 miles from the ocean, nestled in the beautiful Carmel Valley.  Carmelo’s proximity to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Earthbound Farms, the Carmel River, and the Salinas Valley, provides a wealth of experiences and learning opportunities in our community.  Our families are from diverse cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.

Carmelo strives to provide a safe, respectful, and nurturing environment where children, teachers and families can support children to be competent thinkers and lifelong learners.

Teachers observe and value children’s play and exploration.  These observations are used to better understand the child and their learning styles.

Carmelo’s curriculum emerges from the children’s ideas, interests, and investigations.  It reflects concrete and sensory aspects of children’s daily experiences, exploring and learning about their world through what they can see, hear, smell, and touch around them.  The children are encouraged to share their experiences with others.  Teachers help nurture children’s relationships with other children, adults and their community.

Carmelo encourages all families to be involved in our program in many different ways.  Our Carmelo Parent Organization (CPO) is a formal parent group that was established to support the needs of students, families, and teachers.  The CPO’s activities help to build a strong sense of belonging and community here at Carmelo.
