Carmel Unified School District Announces Superintendent To Step Down
Earlier today, the Board of Education of Carmel Unified School District received the resignation of the District’s Superintendent, Ted Knight. The resignation was submitted pursuant to a resolution agreement between the District and Superintendent which followed the completion of an external review of the Superintendent’s actions in relation to personnel matters in mid-June.
The Board is proud of what the District, its staff, and students have accomplished over the past two years and, with this agreement, looks forward to being able to devote its full attention once again to students and the start of the school year. As part of the agreement the Superintendent agrees to dismiss a lawsuit he recently filed against the District. The Superintendent will also withdraw the multiple complaints he lodged against the District. He also forgoes any additional payment or benefits under this current contract or payment for attorneys’ fees. In exchange, the District will provide him a payment derived from the value of two years of his contractual compensation including benefits and retirement, $770,000. The District is pursuing partial contribution from its Joint Powers Authority. The agreement immediately brings all matters between the District and Superintendent to a close with the goal of allowing the District and community to concentrate on supporting teachers and staff and continuing the student-focused work of the District.
The Board of Education had previously named Deputy Superintendent, Sharon Ofek as Acting Superintendent. It anticipates naming an Interim Superintendent at its upcoming August 16th meeting and beginning to discuss selection of the District’s next permanent Superintendent in September.
