CHARACTER EDUCATION AT RIVER SCHOOL
At River School, and throughout Carmel Unified School District, we recognize the value of working with our students to develop traits of good character. We teach and support the positive social-emotional growth of our children and in doing so we create a community of respectful, responsible, caring, fair, and trustworthy citizens. Throughout the school year our students learn what it means to be a person of character, and they explore the "six pillars" of character. We schedule regular assemblies to introduce and celebrate each of our pillars, have specially designed activities to reinforce each pillar, and our classroom teachers and support staff interweave information about these character traits with their regular class activities and curriculum. We encourage our children to be the best they can be, and to contribute to their family, school, community, and world by modeling these traits and demonstrating excellence of character!
Our six pillars of character:
CARING: Being kind, helpful, and generous; showing concern for others; being considerate and compassionate.
FAIRNESS: Playing by the rules, taking turns, sharing, and listening; considering all sides before making a decision; and treating others equally.
RESPECT: Being polite and courteous to everyone; accepting others who are different; using peaceful ways to resolve conflicts; and treating others the way you would like to be treated.
RESPONSIBILITY: Doing what you are supposed to do; working hard and doing your best; using self-control; and accepting the consequences of your choices.
TRUSTWORTHINESS: Being honest, telling the truth; being reliable and loyal; keeping promises made to others; and doing the right thing even when it's hard to do.
CITIZENSHIP: Doing your share to help your family and to make your community a better place; cooperating with others; obeying rules and laws; showing respect to parents, teachers, and others in authority; and protecting the environment.
