Program Overview 2023-24

  • Hello friends and families,

The Captain Cooper Elementary School Library is home to approximately 6,000 books, including fiction, non-fiction, picture books, fables, reference materials, a growing genre of graphic novels and more. Students from Transitional Kindergarten through 5th Grade have access to our rich collection of resources. Students choose from a variety of books that allow them to explore their interests, expand their knowledge, and support their academic journey. The goal of the Cooper library is to provide an updated inventory of engaging library books and materials, maintain a well organized library space, teach basic library skills, standards and policies to students, and to foster a love of reading and literature.

Our library outreach program provides multiple reading challenges throughout the year. The library also maintains a Free Book Cart, stocked with surplus  books for students, staff and families. Anyone is welcome to donate books. Look for our new " free little library" coming soon.

Each year, our library program at Cooper changes to meet the needs of students and school site goals. This year, the library, now called the "multi-use room",  hosts even more activities, such as music classes, after-school programs, and adult education classes. This often happens in small rural schools such as ours, where facilities and library services are limited. As a result, for 2023/24, student library time is scheduled on a drop-in basis, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, from 8:10am-8:25am, before the first bell.

Lastly, students are responsible for their own library materials, with support from home. If a library book is lost or damaged, the book will need to be replaced either by paying a fine (the cost for the librarian to buy a new book), or with an exact copy of the book in satisfactory condition (via another source). Students are able to return books at any time via the book-return bin in the library.  All books should be checked out through the library catalog system. Student check-outs and returns will be processed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, during scheduled library time. Book check-outs are for one week and usually limited to two books per student.

    Let the reading begin!

    Sincerely,

    Tafay Wilson
