Dear Carmel USD Families,
With the pending release of approximately 10 million student records, including Social Security numbers, to attorneys for a parent group suing the California Department of Education (CDE), we thought it was our responsibility to notify our Carmel USD families.  While Carmel USD, nor does any school district in California, have an obligation (from either CDE or the court order) to notify families, we believe direct communication with our school community on ways to object to the disclosure of student data for their child(ren) was the appropriate course of action.  Please review the attached letters that were sent via email to every CUSD parent/guardian on Thursday, February 18, 2016.

Notice provided pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regarding the Court’s Order in Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association v. California Department of Education lawsuit; and parents’ and students’ opportunity to object to the disclosure of protected personal information and records. (See case # 2:11-cv-03471-KJM-AC.)
