    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

The Superintendent search is proceeding as scheduled in our timeline.

The candidate pool was 29 deep and included many highly qualified educators from nine states, with more than a dozen from California.

Seven of these applicants have been selected by the board for first round interviews scheduled April 19th.  Each applicant selected for an interview was carefully vetted using the Leadership Profile and stakeholder input, as well as background research, reference checks, and a thorough screening interview.  These, first round, semi-finalist interviews will be conducted remotely, as per current health requirements for gathering.  HYA has drafted a set of interview questions based on the Leadership Profile and relevant scenarios. Board members will be reviewing these and adding additional questions as necessary. Following the interviews, a slate of finalists will be determined for second round interviews, scheduled for April 23rd.

    Thank you,

    Sara Hinds, Board President

    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

At the onset of our Superintendent search, our consultants at HYA predicted we would likely receive about 20 applications. At the close of the application period, we have a total of 29 applicants from nine states. Of these, 12 have superintendent experience.

“This level of interest and the high quality of applicants is clearly due to the district’s reputation for academic excellence, the array of academic and extracurricular activities opportunities for students, and the district’s clear commitment both to student and staff mental health and to ensuring equitable opportunities and access for every child every day,” noted Dr. Glenn “Max” McGee, President of HYA.

HYA consultants will be completing the screening interviews and background checks this week with the goal of presenting a slate of candidates they are recommending to the Board on Friday, April 9th. The CUSD Board is expected to select five to seven candidates for first round interviews beginning April 16th.

    Thank you,

    Sara Hinds, Board President
    Tess Arthur, Board Clerk

    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

For the Superintendent search, to date, we have received numerous inquiries, a dozen applications, and expect to receive between 17 and 20 applications from highly qualified candidates by the end of this week. Most of the applicants are California administrators, though we have attracted a few out of state applicants.

Beginning April 5th, HYA will hold screening interviews, conduct reference checks, and complete internet news media and social media screening for profiles, posts, and images.  Following this work, on April 9th, Dr. McGee and Dr. Pitts will be recommending a slate of semi-finalists for the Board to consider interviewing.  The Board will be conducting first round interviews the following week and are on schedule to select the new superintendent prior to May 1st.

We welcome you to take a look at the Leadership Profile Report posted on the CUSD and HYA websites:

    Subject: Superintendent Search Update

    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

During the special Board of Education meeting on March 19, 2021, our search firm HYA presented a summary of the Leadership Profile Report to the Board and community. The presentation is now posted on the CUSD website https://www.carmelunified.org/Page/5871 and the HYA website https://hyasearch.com/job/superintendent-carmel-ca/

The information that informed the report was garnered from more than 150 individuals in interviews, focus groups, and forums, as well as 606 survey respondents, and several emails to HYA consultants. The Board is very appreciative of the high level and high quality of community responses. We are especially thankful to the 177 students who responded to the survey because our students’ voices and opinions matter deeply to us.

The report is being used to recruit applicants and the Board. We will also use what we learned from the Engagement Phase to formulate our interview questions and to help guide our reference checks and to plan a successful transition for the superintendent we select. Your voices have been heard and are helpful to us as we navigate this critically important process.

To date, HYA has received a dozen inquiries and four completed applications. They predict we will ultimately have 15 to 20 highly qualified applicants.

During the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 a superintendent search update will be provided during Board Reports.

    Thank you,

    Sara Hinds, Board President
    Tess Arthur, Board Clerk

    Subject: Superintendent Search Update

    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

The Superintendent search process is progressing. Over the past two weeks, consultants from HYA have conducted over 20 focus groups and individual interviews with key stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, community groups, service clubs, government officials, and other district partners. During this stakeholder engagement process, a survey for all stakeholders was also made available on the district websites and via community emails. More than 600 respondents have weighed in on important issues and priorities in the district (including 177 students). The survey and focus groups have helped to clarify the skills and experiences the next superintendent for CUSD will need in order to succeed in our high-performing and diverse school district and community.  A leadership profile will be developed using the information gleaned from the survey and focus groups and used during the next phase of the process, which is the recruitment phase. This Leadership Profile will be reviewed during the special Board of Education meeting on Friday, March 19.

According to consultants Pitts and McGee, several qualified educators have expressed interest in the position, and several more will reach out after viewing the Leadership Profile. Serious applicants will participate in screening interviews with our consultants, as well as initial reference and background checks.  The Board will review a slate of candidates matching the Leadership Profile characteristics and select semi-finalists for first-round interviews.

We are pleased with the progress to-date and feel confident that we will succeed in attracting an exceptionally qualified candidate.

Please join us at our special Board of Education meeting Friday, March 19.

    Thank you,

    Sara Hinds, Board President
    Tess Arthur, Board Clerk

    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

This week we’ll be wrapping up the first phase of the search process, which is to engage the community at large, as well as teachers, staff, and parents. We have been gathering information through a variety of methods; individual interviews, a community survey, focus groups, and community forums. When the “Engage” phase of the process ends this Friday, March 12th, the results will be used to create a Leadership Profile that will ultimately help guide the selection of candidates. The Leadership Profile will be shared during our March 19th special Board meeting.

The feedback we have received thus far has been extremely helpful as we move through the process of hiring a new Superintendent, and specifically, in the creation of our Leadership Profile. We would like to thank those of you who have shared your input and completed the Superintendent Search survey. We have received almost 300 responses, so if you have yet to fill out the survey, please take a few minutes to do so by March 12th.

    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

At the special meeting Friday, February 26, 2021, the Board of Trustees approved the Letter of Agreement with the selected search firm, Hazard, Young, Attea, & Associates (HYA).  The HYA representatives, Dr. Valerie Pitts and Max McGee, also conducted a planning session with the Board; discussing timelines and other search components.

The first phase of the search process is to engage the community at large, as well as teachers, staff and parents. The “Engage” phase of the process involves gathering information through a variety of methods, individual interviews, a community survey, focus groups and community forums. This work, which is slated to run from March 1 to 12,  will result in the recommendation of a Leadership Profile. The Board discussed the need for broad community input and active outreach to stakeholders from the different areas of the District. All stakeholders will be provided an opportunity to complete a CUSD Superintendent Search survey starting next week through March 12, 2021.  Additionally, the HYA consultants provided their contact information so that stakeholders can reach out to them individually during the course of the process.

    Their contact information is:

    Max McGee                maxmcgee@hyasearch.com          224.234.6129
    Dr. Valerie Pitts           valeriepitts@hyasearch.com          831.332.5126

We have concurrently launched the “Recruit” phase of the search process. Starting on Tuesday, February 27, 2021, the position was advertised through ACSA’s online Career Center and in print in ACSA’s EdCal publication on Monday, March 1, 2021. This phase will run for the month of March and will include active recruitment of candidates along with advertising efforts.

During the special meeting, the Board also discussed the “Select” phase; where candidates are selected and interviewed. There was consensus that the Board would like to ensure the search is done expeditiously, while maintaining the integrity of all of the components. The Board also indicated that they would like each candidate to respond to written prompts as a part of the application process.

As we continue to move ahead with the search, we look forward to further engaging our district and our community.

We welcome you to join us via Zoom for our upcoming meetings in March where updates will be provided:

March 10th - regular board meeting 4:30 closed session / 5:30 open session
March 19th - special open session meeting - HYA presentation of Leadership Profile

    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

At a special meeting last Friday, February 19, 2021, two search firms presented their case to the Board as to why they should be selected to support the district in the search for our next superintendent.  Following the search firm presentations and related questions from the Board, and an in-depth discussion, the Board unanimously selected Hazard, Young, Attea, & Associates (HYA) to conduct the CUSD superintendent search.

District staff has begun the process to advertise the position through ACSA’s EdCal, the leading source for California school administrator job searches.  Our intent is to have another special board meeting on February 26, 2021 which will serve as a planning session with HYA consultants and the Board. Thereafter we will provide updates as the search progresses. During our March 10, 2021 meeting we will provide an in-depth update.

The Board is very aware of our community’s sense of urgency around this search and we share your desire to move things along quickly. Know that we are moving as efficiently as possible and we will continue to keep you informed and engaged throughout this process.

    Sara Hinds, Board President

    Dear CUSD Families and Staff,

The Superintendent search process has continued to move ahead and over the next two weeks we will select a firm to aid in the execution of our search. After our initial outreach to firms, we received two responsive proposals and conducted thorough reference checks. At a special meeting this Friday, February 19, 2021, the two firms will present their case to the Board as to why they should be selected to support CUSD in the search for our next superintendent.  Following the search firm presentations and related questions from the Board, the Board will select one of the firms to conduct the CUSD superintendent search.

As previously stated at our February 10, 2021 meeting, our intent is to have another special board meeting on or around February 26, 2021. We will then provide another community update during our March 10, 2021 meeting. Our goal is to continue to keep our community informed and engaged throughout this process.

Once again, we look forward to identifying the search firm that is best equipped to support the District in hiring our next Superintendent. We will continue to update the community as we move through this process.

    Sara Hinds, Board President
    Tess Arthur, Board Clerk
