  • U.S. History - A.P.

    AP students are expected to read well, have mastered research techniques, express themselves coherently in written and oral reports, and be prepared to involve themselves in a rigorous study of American history. In this course, students examine major turning points in American history, beginning with colonization and continuing to the present. During the year, certain themes will be emphasized: The development and growth of the federal government; the continuing struggle between the individual and the state and between minority rights and the majority power; the impact of technology on American society; the movement toward equal rights for minorities and women; and the role of the United States as a world power. Students will examine American culture, including religion, art, drama, music, and literature. The format of the class is based on lecture, writing assignments, objective and essay tests, quizzes, and research papers. Preparation for taking the Advanced Placement US History test will be an integral part of this course.

  • World History - A.P.

    This course examines the history of the human experience from a global perspective. It covers the time period from 8,000 BCE to the present. The focus will be on the impact of interactions among major societies; change and continuity over time; the impact of technology and demography on people and the environment; systems of social structure and gender structure; cultural and intellectual developments among and within societies; and changes in functions and structures of states. The course emphasizes critical thinking and the analytical and writing skills necessary for success in a college level history course. Considerable time will be dedicated to the evaluation of primary documents, the successful writing of document-based questions (DBQs), the analysis of historiography, College Board essay strategies, and the development of analytical and critical thinking skills. It is expected that all students taking AP World will take the Advanced Placement test in May which, if passed, can earn college credits for the student.
