AP students are expected to read well, have mastered research techniques, express themselves coherently in written and oral reports, and be prepared to involve themselves in a rigorous study of American history. In this course, students examine major turning points in American history, beginning with colonization and continuing to the present. During the year, certain themes will be emphasized: The development and growth of the federal government; the continuing struggle between the individual and the state and between minority rights and the majority power; the impact of technology on American society; the movement toward equal rights for minorities and women; and the role of the United States as a world power. Students will examine American culture, including religion, art, drama, music, and literature. The format of the class is based on lecture, writing assignments, objective and essay tests, quizzes, and research papers. Preparation for taking the Advanced Placement US History test will be an integral part of this course.
