  • Advanced Photography (ROP)

    This level II course will continue to expand on the skills covered in the level I course with added emphasis on developing a student photographic portfolio. The portfolio will meet the expectations for applying for entry level employment for entrance to advance training program in photography. This course will also explore in depth: studio lighting, medium-format cameras and film, use of Polaroid, alternative and advanced printing. Electronic/computer imaging will be introduced, and there will be several visits to local galleries and professional studios.

    • Prerequisites:One year or the equivalent of level I photography with grade of "C" or better.
  • Animal Science (ROP)

    Students will study the various aspects of proper animal care including feeding, grooming, disease prevention, knowledge of animal behavior and identification of the various breeds within each species.  The first semester focuses on dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, hamsters and guinea pigs.  The second semester allows students to explore and learn about wildlife and livestock such as horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and goats.  Upon completion of the entire course students will receive a certificate.Successful Completion: Meets the career/occupations, life science or science elective graduation requirement. Provides skills for entry level employment and/or advanced placement. May be taken four semesters.

  • Automotives (ROP)

    TMeets five units per semester of the elective graduation requirement and develops skills in the proper use of automotive repair tools and equipment. It provides basic knowledge of skills which allow entrance into a technical-vocational level training program and qualify the student to seek entry level jobs. May be taken for four semesters.his course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of the automobile and its function. Through assigned reading, class discussion, and lab activity, each system of the automobile is covered: engine nomenclature, electrical, fuel, cooling, lubrication, power train, brakes, and accessories. About two-thirds of the time is spent in "live" work in the automotive laboratory.

  • Business Enterprise Development (ROP)

    This class offers students an opportunity to plan, design, and execute a viable retail business on the CHS campus. Students will act as corporate officers and managers to fulfill all the required functions in the operation of a sustainable and profitable business. Areas of study will focus on the six key functions of business responsibility: merchandising, finance control, store operations, personnel, sales and marketing, and ethics. Students will gain vital on-the-job experience in marketing and management while operating the student store, which will feature CHS merchandise as well as student-selected inventory.

  • Construction Technology (ROP)

    Construction Technology provides the opportunity to understand and prepare for a career in the skilled trades and professions involved in the building of residential and commercial structures. Through classroom studies, related hands-on activities, and work site observations, students will develop the knowledge and have the experiences needed to understand the construction industry and evaluate their interests and abilities as they relate to its many careers. This will form the basis for planning a career goal which might be an entry level job after high school, or further preparation leading to technical or professional positions related to construction. Construction students will also have an opportunity to apply the knowledge that they have gained in science, math, and communications and their ability to solve problems through critical thinking.

  • Dance Company (ROP)

    Advanced Dance Company is a course in technique, choreography, and performance. Professional guest choreographers set dances for the company every semester and teach master classes throughout the year. This course includes a variety of production techniques, including lighting, costuming, makeup, and performance for the stage. Students are involved in actual performance situations (requires additional time commitment outside of class). Dance technique and movement combination, plus techniques in choreography, are used as the basis for performance. Students run the Dance Company as a class. Students will learn marketing, budgeting, public relations, and company development skills.

  • Drama II (ROP)

    Focus will center on in-depth character development for the experienced actor, incorporating monologues for use as audition material, scene work with emphasis on building a character, and directing with attention given to blocking, pacing, and theme development. In addition to voice and diction work, physical warm-ups for the actor which increase flexibility and strength will be practiced. Students are required to participate in special projects which may include directing other drama students in scenes, video-taping and editing performances, acting for the camera, and/or working in a Padre Production.

  • Fashion Design I (ROP)

    This course introduces the student to the world of sewing and fashion design. Students will learn skills that will enable them to create their own clothing, quilts, and other original designs. Through a series of class projects, students will learn the sewing machine, serger, pattern- making, color theory, fabric selection, layout, and how the fashion industry works.

    • Prerequisites:Open to male and female students. Recommended for those interested in design, fashion, and interior design.
  • Graphic Design (ROP)

    This is an art and design class that gives students the skills needed to work as graphic designers. The emphasis is on creativity and learning professional tools and skills to solve creative puzzles. We learn to use Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator to complete a number of design projects, including the design of a CD cover and a book. Basic page layout and typography concepts will be covered. Students interested in an art or design career will gain highly marketable skills.

  • Interior Design And Furnishing (ROP)

    This course provides students with entry level skills needed for employment or advanced college training in interior design and furnishings occupations.  Students will learn basic skills in home and office furnishing and the equipment and services related to interior design.  The course covers scale drawings, fabric, furniture, housing styles, color, design principles, and display techniques. Class activities include guest speakers, job skill training, and possible placement in a local interior design studio or department (usually an afternoon or evening class).

  • Introduction To Dance Company (ROP)

    This is an intermediate course in technique, genres of dance, choreography, and performance skills. Students will further develop their dance technique and skills. Students will learn the tools of choreography and staging. Each student will learn to choreograph a dance from beginning to end. Choreography will be set for performance (requires some time commitment out of class).

  • Jewelry/Small Sculpture (ROP)

    Students explore a wide variety of materials and methods for creating three-dimensional work, including jewelry making. Materials used include clay, wire, wax, sheet metal, wood, and stone. Techniques include hand fabrication, lost wax casting, carving, and hand-built ceramics. Proper shop safety procedures will be followed.

  • Ornamental Horticulture (ROP)

    Students will be introduced to basic horticulture techniques with emphasis on the technologies and biological relationships involved in soil management, pest management, greenhouse production, plant propagation, organic gardening (vegetables, herbs, flowers), managing soil fertility and structure, habitat restoration, plant identification, making and using compost, seed collecting, and plant and animal ecology. Course emphasizes conditions of the Monterey Bay area and involves hands-on experience with the facilities of the Carmel Middle School Habitat horticulture facility and nearby restoration sites. Students will work off campus at those locations.

  • Photography (ROP)

    This course is designed to offer the student, with little or no photographic experience, a sound basis for becoming a competent technician in black and white photography. Areas to be covered are: choosing the appropriate camera, handling and maintenance, lens selection, correct exposure for various situations, film processing, printing, mounting and retouching photographs. There will be extensive laboratory experience on nine major assignments each semester.

  • Sports Medicine I (ROP)

    This course provides students with skills, knowledge, and experience in the areas of physical fitness, physical therapy, and athletic training.  This course will focus on anatomy and physiology, theory of exercise, athletic injuries, training management, physical therapy and athletic training.

  • Sports Medicine Ii – Internship (ROP)

    The focus of this course is to allow each student to obtain hands-on experience at local physical therapy clinics, health clubs, athletic training rooms, and doctors' offices. The goal is to educate the student about career choices and colleges/universities that offer these health career choices. Students serve as interns in business and put their classroom skills to work in the professional world.

  • Technical Writing (Yearbook) (ROP)

    Students in this course carry the responsibility for producing the school yearbook. Elements of production include layout, graphics, photography, copy writing, advertising, sales, and contract negotiations for publications.

  • Video Production (ROP)

    In this hands-on class, students will be introduced to the processes and equipment involved in producing a video. Students will learn the process from conceptualization through distribution. Skills such as script writing, camera operation, directing, lighting, sound mixing, and editing will enable students to produce video for other classes and move on to advanced classes at four-year or community colleges. Students will develop production planning, storyboarding, script writing, budgeting, and time management skills as a natural outcome of video production.
