Foreign Language Courses

  • French I

    This course is an introduction to the French language and culture through the use of textbooks, workbooks, and videos. The emphasis in this class is on learning correct pronunciation, everyday expressions and vocabulary, and basic grammar.

  • French II

    In French II, students continue the skill building process begun in French I. Students speak French in class and concentrate on their reading, pronunciation, writing and communication skills. Upon completion of French II, those students who began the sequence at Carmel Middle School receive  high school credit for French I and II.

    • Prerequisites:French I or equivalent. Students repeating a semester of language must have a "C" or better or teacher's approval to continue to the next semester.
  • French III

    The course will deal with a variety of practical and cultural subjects, such as going shopping, eating out, traveling, hotels, airports, sports, traditions, music, and the way of life in French speaking countries. Class will be conducted in French, and the stress will be on speaking and understanding French in a variety of situations. In addition, there will be a grammar review, selected reading, and practice in writing compositions to prepare students for subsequent advanced classes in French.

    • Prerequisites: At least two years of high school French or equivalent. Willingness to speak French at all times during instruction. Teacher approval.
  • French IV

    In this class students study the art, architecture, and history of France. The class is taught on a high level in French and includes vocabulary building, grammatical review and extensive reading.

    • Prerequisites:Completion of French III with a grade of "B" or better and permission of instructor.
  • French V / Advanced Placement French

    This course is the same as French IV with the exception that additional preparation is given to help prepare for the AP Exam and the SAT II in French. Additional work is given on improving listening comprehension, speaking, grammar, reading, and composition.

    • Prerequisites:Completion of French IV. It is recommended that students who have already taken French IV and who want to prepare for the AP Exam in French, take this section.
  • Spanish I

    The emphases of this course are to learn to understand and speak Spanish on a basic level, to deal with practical situations often encountered in the Spanish speaking world, and to learn about cultural differences, vocabulary, correct sentence structure, and grammar.

    • Prerequisites: At least a "C" average in English. Students repeating a semester of language must have a "C" or better, or teacher's approval to continue to the next semester.
  • Spanish II

     In Spanish II, students continue the skill building process begun in Spanish I. Students speak Spanish in class and concentrate on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. During this second year, students increase their ability to read more complicated material and handle more difficult structure. Upon completion of Spanish II those students who began the sequence at Carmel Middle School will receive credit for Spanish I and II.

    • Prerequisites: Completion of Spanish I or equivalent with "C" or better. Students repeating a semester of a language must have a "C" or better or teacher's approval to continue to the next semester.
  • Spanish III

    The course deals with a variety of cultural subjects and traditions. The stress will be on speaking and understanding Spanish in a variety of situations. There are additional grammatical concepts, selected readings and practice in writing compositions to prepare students for subsequent advanced classes in Spanish.

    • Prerequisites: At least two years of high school Spanish or equivalent with at least a "C" average for each semester. Willingness to speak Spanish during instruction. Teacher approval.
  • Spanish IV Honors

    In this class the students are introduced to authentic Spanish literature including North American and Latin American authors. History of Spain, Mexico and Latin America is also included in the readings. The class is taught exclusively in Spanish and requires active oral student participation.  Vocabulary  and grammar are developed and reviewed and reading of one novel per quarter is required.
