  • American Literature

    This course exposes students to the major movements and works of American literature. Emphasis will be placed on the intricate relationship between literary and cultural development. Beginning with a study of colonialism, the course will continue chronologically, and the second semester will be devoted to modern and contemporary literature. Major authors include Hawthorne, Twain, Wright, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Steinbeck.Also included in this course is advanced study in composition. Students will develop their expository, persuasive, and research writing techniques, with an emphasis on enhancing structure, analysis, and style. Students will also be expected to create and deliver multi-media presentations.Successful Completion: Meets one year of the English graduation requirement.

  • American Literature Honors

    The course provides an overview of the development of American literature from colonial times to the present. The focus of the course will be on major changes in and the development of the short story, novel, play, and poetry genres. As literature is a reflection of its time, as well as of the individual author, emphasis is also placed on historical context. The format of the class is based on lecture, discussion, writing, assignments, quizzes, and essay tests. One term paper per semester is also required. A partial list of authors studied includes: Bradford, Wigglesworth, Franklin, Wheatley, Irving, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Dickinson, Twain, James, Crane, Norris, Wharton, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, O'Neill, Frost, Capote, and Jeffers, et. al.Successful Completion: Meets one year of the English graduation requirement.

  • American Literature Lab

    American Literature Lab is designed to assist students who are struggling with their reading and writing skills. In order to qualify for this course, students must be concurrently enrolled in college preparatory English Literature and must have been recommended by their previous or current English teacher. The class objectives are for students to gain the skills necessary to score at “Basic” or above on the Language Arts sections of the CST/STAR Test, pass the California High School Exit Exam, and maintain a “C” or better in college preparatory English. The curriculum for this course consists of silent sustained reading, skill-building exercises, standardized test practice, and guided independent study on English assignments.Successful Completion: Meets one year of the Elective graduation requirement.

  • British Literature And British Literature Honors

    The first semester is a survey course of British Literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Age of Reason. The course content includes the great work of each age with special emphasis on Chaucer, Shakespeare and Milton. The course also covers the development of language and vocabulary, as well as a cursory study of the British spirit and history.The second semester covers the Age of Reason, Pre-Romantic Period, Romantic Age, Victorian Age, and contemporary British Literature. Assignments include essays (exposition), memorization of famous passages in British Literature, and discussions of the works.

  • English I

    Content: English I offers a balanced curriculum of literature, composition, oral communication, grammar, and vocabulary development. Students will be introduced to the genres of literature, including the novel, short story, drama, poetry, mythology, and nonfiction. They will also develop their writing process and gain practice writing descriptive, narrative, and expository compositions. Grammatical study will emphasize usage, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and proper use of pronouns.

  • English I And II Honors

    In English I and II Honors students will study literature from around the world in historical and cultural context. English I exposes students to literature of the Ancient East, Classical Greece and Rome, Medieval Europe, and the Renaissance. Texts include Siddhartha, The Odyssey, Bulfinch’s Mythology, and Romeo and Juliet, as well as abundant short readings in the Humanities. In English II, students begin with a Renaissance review and continue through the Enlightenment, and the Romantic, Victorian, Modern, and Post-Modern Eras. Texts will include Othello, Jane Eyre, A Tale of Two Cities, All Quiet on the Western Front, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, Catcher in the Rye, Night, The Laramie Project, and selected poetry and readings in the Humanities. In addition to their study of literature, students will develop their vocabulary, grammar, and public speaking skills as well as gain experience writing expository, narrative, and persuasive compositions. Success in English I and II will prepare students for the rigor of Advanced Placement courses in English.

  • English II

    In English II students will be exposed to literature from around the world. Novels, plays, short stories, poems, and nonfiction texts will be closely examined, not only for their plot, character, and thematic development, but also in light of their biographical, historical, and cultural context. Students will begin to see literature as a vehicle for understanding global issues. Also, students can expect to complete multi-media presentations and cross-curricular projects with World History.In addition to their study of literature, students will continue to develop their expository and persuasive writing and speaking skills. Emphasis will be placed on format, organization, content, and stylistic development. Students will also learn to skillfully utilize computer technology, responsibly research topics, successfully incorporate their findings into their own writing, and properly document their sources. Grammar and vocabulary study will be used to enhance oral and written communication.

  • English Language Development (ELD)

    ELD is tailored to the needs and abilities of each student. The four domains of language (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) are taught using a variety of teaching methods. Students learn to use English effectively in both social and academic settings.

    • Prerequisites:Non-native speaker of English, grades 9-12. All entering non-native English speakers will take the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) to determine placement. Progression between levels is based on the student’s annual CELDT score and teacher recommendation. These courses may be repeated as needed.
  • English Language Development (ELD) Social Science/History

    This course offers United States History (2004/05) and World History (2005/06), alternating each year thereafter. Speaking, reading, writing, and listening will be emphasized through the use of the content area of U.S. history or world history. This course may be repeated with each year, focusing on either US History or World History.

  • Literature Of Sport

    Content: Students will analyze, investigate, and study, from a literary perspective, the unique phenomenon of participatory and competitive sport. Students can expect to participate in seminar discussions that focus on close-text analysis and critical approaches to sports literature. Emphasis will also be placed on writing extensively about the literature, in a variety of formats, including personal responses, various expository essays, a critical research paper, poetry, and a piece of short fiction.

  • Poetry

    Poetry exposes students to a breadth of poets and poems from various cultures and time periods.  Students read, interpret, discuss, analyze, and write about poetry and gain experience writing original poems using techniques and styles learned.

  • Shakespeare

    This course provides intensive study of Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies, and poems. Plays will be primarily read aloud by students in class, and discussion will focus on comprehension, interpretation, and analysis of the text, plot, characters, and themes. Students will also examine the biographical and historical context of Shakespeare’s plays. Students are expected to write brief interpretive essays as well as two major term papers.

  • Writing

    In Writing, students will study various aspects of writing for multiple purposes and audiences. Units will include Writing for the Workplace, Writing for Academia, Writing for Publication, and Writing for the Media. Students will write journals, advertisements, speeches, résumés, fiction, and a research paper, in addition to many other forms. The focus will be on the process of writing. Course texts will include: The Water is Wide by Conroy; Cannery Row by Steinbeck; On Writing by King; and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Haddon. Students will be assessed through writing assignments, oral presentations, responses to reading, and class participation.
