Attendance policies

Students who need to be absent from school for reasons other than those excusable by the California Education Code (illness, medical appointments, funeral, court appearance, religious observances, jury duty for 18-year-olds) need administrative approval and a student work assignment form completed by teachers.

Please contact me as soon as you know that your son/daughter might need to be absent from school. It is difficult for students who are absent for extended days to keep up with their assignments/ learning and to return successfully to classes.   ...Read More

February

Sophomore Parents -  The CaliforniaHigh School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) will be given to all 10th graders on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 5th-6th.  Tuesday is a minimum day schedule for all students, with a release time of 12:20. Sophomores will be tested on the CAHSEE in the morning.  Passage of the CAHSEE is required for graduation from CHS.  Please be sure your student is rested and has a good breakfast next week!

Freshman Parents - A new state law requires that all 9th graders pass the State Physical Fitness Test, which Carmel High School completes in the Freshman Core PE class.  Freshmen are required to pass five of the tests, and one of those tests must include the mile run.  Failure to meet these state requirements will result in repeating Freshman Core PE the following year.

These six State Physical Fitness Tests are:

  • Mile Run (required)
  • Push-ups
  • Curl-ups
  • Body Composition
  • Sit and Reach
  • Trunk Lift

Please encourage your student to put forth their best efforts during testing units!

ROP (Regional Occupational Program)

Collapse Window

In Addition to her duties as Assistant Principal, responsible for attendance issues, Ms. Salmon heads the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) at Carmel High, which offers a variety of classes, ranging from graphic design, automotives, animal care, construction technology, technical writing (newspaper /yearbook), and cosmetology, to more unique offerings such as fashion design, photography, dance, drama, and sports medicine.

Several of our graduates have started their careers in ROP classes and have used those classes as a foundation for further education or entry into the workforce. In addition, several articulation agreements between ROP classes and similar MPC (Monterey Peninsula College) courses allow students to get waivers and/or credits for classes at MPC.
