This is a message from the Carmel Unified School District to families in the Big Sur and Palo Colorado areas about school and transportation services for Monday.
We are inspired by the strength of the community during this challenging time, and we are working diligently to put short and long-term solutions into place to meet the needs of the children and famlies.
At Captain Cooper School and Apple Pie School, the water system was affected by the storms. Therefore, Captain Cooper and Apple Pie will be closed on Monday while we assess the damage and work on the water system.
Because of road conditions on Highway 1, our buses can safely drive only as far south as Palo Colorado Road. For that reason, there will be no buses to Big Sur on Monday. We understand if road conditions or emergencies at home prevent you from getting to school.
CMS and CHS students may access assignments on Moodle if you have internet access. You are also encouraged to call your school counselor to discuss your family’s situation or respond to the email sent with details about where you are staying and your need for school services. For CMS and CHS students, making arrangements with a host family in town may be a good option.
We are looking for a way to deliver instruction to students who are south of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge. For now, there is no dependable way to get teachers into the area, and there are very limited spaces available to offer services south of the bridge.
By Monday afternoon we will announce the updated plans for transportation and school services for Big Sur students.
Providing the highest-quality education program is the district’s goal. Thank you for your understanding as we all work together through the challenges presented by the recent storms.
A message from the Carmel Unified School District for families in Cachagua about transportation and school plans for next week:
At this time, our buses are expected to be able to make all regular bus stops in Cachagua on schedule for next week. However, the Cachagua Center is closed until further notice because of water quality concerns. Cachagua Preschool will be held at Carmelo Child Development Center in mid-Valley in Room 8. Parents will need to provide transportation for their students.
